This entry is about our limited shopping experience for the past three days. Once we start looking at referrals and going to the orphanage, we will be not as available to go out to the stores.
The place that we are staying at is conveniently located near the heart of the Nizhniy Novgorod and the main shopping area. You will notice in our photos that the shopping area itself is about 1 ½ miles long. The road is paved in bricks. The buildings are old and not in good condition. The streets are dirty. Store shop owners keep their doors open during the day. They are frequently mopping the floors in these stores and the brick area in front because there is so much dust and dirt.
The stores consist of world recognized names such as Adidas , Reebok , and Columbia, as well as shops run by local owners. The square footage of each shop varies. Most are smaller than a 12x12 room. Of course there are local restaurants and restaurants like McDonalds and Subway. There are many local bars/eateries that are located in the basement of buildings. There are banks, the equivalent of mini-marts, bakeries, and local vendors who sell their wares. They have theaters that show American movies dubbed in Russian. I think we found an arcade, too. We didn’t go in, but saw it from the outside.
There are no department stores. We saw a store that we thought was a department store, only to learn that it was small, 9x9 average size spaces rented to different people for selling items. Kind of like a miniature mall.
What we found none of…toy stores or stores for children. There was one store that had children’s clothing. My hypothesis about this observation is that the lack of a toy store correlates to the value that this culture places on children. L
